The Man Who Cooked Up Las Vegas

Nicky Santoro and Ace Rothstein, somewhere in the desert outside Vegas, late at night, talking about the real guy who started the whole thing.

Ace Rothstein: You ever stop and think about Bugsy? Siegel. The original. Not this half-assed version of the town we got now. He was the one who looked at this empty stretch of nowhere and said, “I’m gonna put a palace here.” Flamingo. 1946. Before that it was just dirt, heat, and a few cowboys losing their paychecks.

Nicky Santoro: Bugsy. Yeah. Crazy Jew from the East. Good-looking, always dressed sharp, thought he was a movie star. Ran with Meyer and Lucky. They sent him out here to lean on the unions and open the town up. He did it. Built the Flamingo when nobody else had the balls. Spent a fortune. Overran every budget. Had that Virginia Hill dame bleeding money left and right. The boys back East started getting nervous.

Ace: He wasn’t a businessman. That was the problem. He was a dreamer with a gun. Wanted the place to be classy—Hollywood people, big shows, real carpets. But he didn’t know how to count. Every contractor was stealing from him, every supplier was padding the bills, and Bugsy was too busy playing the big shot to notice. By the time the Flamingo opened it was already underwater. Then the hits started coming in the papers—“Siegel’s Folly,” all that. The Commission got tired of the losses.

Nicky: They clipped him in ’47. Beverly Hills. Sitting on the couch reading the paper, Virginia’s place. Two shots through the window. One in the eye. Classic. And the second the body hit the floor, the money started flowing the right way. The Flamingo turned around almost overnight. Funny how that works. Guy builds the dream, gets too loud about it, and the dream keeps going without him.

Ace: He put Las Vegas on the map. Without Siegel there’s no Strip the way we know it. No big rooms, no high rollers flying in. He saw it first. The rest of us just refined it—made it run like a machine instead of a circus. But you cross the people who put up the money, you end up with your brains on the living-room floor.

Nicky: Yeah. And half the guys who talk about him now act like he was some kind of genius. He was a cowboy. Beautiful idea, terrible execution. We learned from it. Keep the dream quiet, keep the books clean, and if somebody starts believing their own press… well. You know how that ends.

Ace: Exactly. Bugsy built the house. We just made sure the house always wins.

(They sit for a moment in the dark, the neon of the Strip glowing in the distance like a promise that never quite keeps itself.)

The Beating Heart of America

Ace Rothstein and Nicky Santoro sit in a quiet corner of the Tangiers, late at night. Ace’s meticulously arranged papers are pushed aside. A half-empty bottle of Scotch sits between them. The casino floor hums faintly in the background.

Ace: You wanna know what keeps this whole goddamn country breathing, Nicky? It ain’t politics. It ain’t religion. It ain’t even the money, though the money’s nice. It’s sports. The beating heart of America. Pure and simple.

Nicky: Sports? You’re talkin’ about grown men chasing a ball around like a buncha kids? That’s the heart of America?

Ace: Exactly. Look at it. Every Sunday the whole country stops. Fathers and sons, strangers in a bar, even the guys who hate each other… they all shut up and stare at the same thing. Football. Baseball. Basketball. It’s the one place left where the numbers don’t lie and the rules are the same for everybody. You can’t spin it. You can’t bribe the final score. Well… mostly.

Nicky: (laughs, low and mean) Mostly. You ever meet a bookie who didn’t try to get cute with the point spread?

Ace: That’s the beauty of it. The game itself stays clean even when the people around it get dirty. People need that. They need something that feels bigger than their own mess. You put a man in front of a television with a cold beer and a game on, and for three hours he ain’t thinking about his mortgage or his wife or the guy who’s looking to put a bullet in his head. He’s free.

Nicky: Free, huh. You sound like one of those TV commercials. “Sports… the great American equalizer.”

Ace: It is. A black kid from the projects and a rich kid from the suburbs can both throw a perfect spiral. A short guy who can’t get a date can still sink a three-pointer and own the whole arena for one night. That’s democracy with a scoreboard, Nicky. That’s the real American dream—not the one they sell you in the casinos. The one where talent still means something.

Nicky: (leans in, eyes sharp) Yeah, and then the owners, the commissioners, the networks… they turn it into another racket. Same as we did with the tables. They package it, sell it, juice it up with lights and music until the pure thing is buried under a mountain of money.

Ace: True. But the heart is still there. Underneath all the noise. You can still feel it when a stadium full of strangers jumps up at the same exact second because somebody did something impossible. That feeling… that’s America. The only thing left that can still make a whole country feel the same thing at the same time without somebody having to die for it.

Nicky: (sits back, considers it) Huh. Beating heart of America. Sports.

(pauses, then grins)

You’re a real fuckin’ poet when you wanna be, Ace.

Ace: Just don’t tell anybody. Ruins the image.

Nicky: (raises his glass) To the game, then. May the spreads stay honest… and the suckers keep coming.

Ace: I’ll drink to that.

They clink glasses. Outside, the desert night is quiet. Inside, the heart keeps beating.

Arsenal > Sporting Lisbon: April 15th, 2026

Here are the strongest, reality-based reasons why Arsenal will beat Sporting CP in this upcoming Champions League match:

🔴 1. Arsenal already have the advantage

  • Arsenal won the first leg 1–0 in Lisbon thanks to a late goal.
  • That means:
    • They can control the game
    • Sporting are forced to take risks and attack

👉 In knockout football, having the lead is massive.

Ace pick

🏟️ 2. Emirates home advantage

  • The second leg is at Arsenal’s home stadium.
  • Arsenal have:
    • Won 7 of their last 8 home games
    • Been dominant at home in Europe

👉 Sporting’s away record is weaker:

  • Only 1 win in 5 away Champions League games

📊 3. Elite Champions League form

  • Arsenal have won 10 of 11 Champions League matches this season
  • They average:
    • 2.45 goals scored
    • Just 0.45 conceded per game

👉 That’s elite, title-contender level performance.

🔐 4. Strong defensive structure

  • Arsenal:
    • Keep lots of clean sheets (15 this season)
    • Have a top keeper in David Raya (huge saves in first leg)

👉 In a tight tie, defense wins games—and Arsenal excel here.

⚔️ 5. Tactical flexibility (Arteta factor)

  • Mikel Arteta is known for:
    • Adjusting tactics mid-game
    • Controlling tempo when leading

👉 Expect Arsenal to:

  • Slow the game down
  • Hit Sporting on counters

🔥 6. Match-winner in form: Kai Havertz

  • Kai Havertz:
    • Scored the winner in the first leg
    • Has 3 goals in last 4 UCL games

👉 He’s stepping up in big moments.

📉 7. Sporting are underdogs for a reason

  • Odds heavily favor Arsenal:
    • Around 4/9 to win the match
  • Sporting:
    • Less experienced at this stage
    • Inconsistent away in Europe

👉 They’ll need to chase the game—which plays into Arsenal’s hands.

🧠 8. Head-to-head dominance

  • Arsenal are:
    • Unbeaten in 6 meetings vs Sporting
    • Comfortable stylistically against them

👉 Psychological edge matters in big ties.

⚖️ BUT (important reality check)

Arsenal are not unbeatable here:

  • Injury concerns (Saka, Rice, Ødegaard doubts)
  • Recent poor domestic form
  • Pressure is high

👉 Sporting absolutely have a chance if Arsenal slip.

🧾 Bottom line

Arsenal will win if they:

  • Stay compact defensively
  • Score first (kills the tie)
  • Control tempo at home

Most likely scenario:
👉 Arsenal 1–0 or 2–0 win (tight, controlled game)
